Encouraging Hand Washing

Germs are a fact of life. They are everywhere. That is why Children’s Corner encourages frequent hand washing. We ask parents to assist children in washing their hands upon entering the building every morning. We also enforce hand washing throughout the day.

Children will wash their hands after using paint or glue. They wash hands after playtime, when reentering the building and before lunch and snacks. Hands are also washed when   children go to the bathroom or touch their nose or mouth.

Children’s Corner has a hand washing procedure that is followed. Hands are washed with soap and  scrubbed under water for at least 20 seconds. That is the length of time it takes to sing the “ABC’s” or “Happy Birthday” or “ Row your Boat” twice through. Children are asked to wash the backs of their hands and to make “spider legs” with their fingers by intertwining them. Finally, hands are dried with a paper towel.

Since Children’s Corner has introduced this policy, there has been a noticeable decrease in the absences of children especially in the winter.

Other ways of reducing the spread of germs include having  the children sneeze “into their elbow”. We ask the children to sneeze into the crook of their bent arm rather than onto their hands. Also we strive to teach the children to avoid touching their face as much as possible It is when the eyes, mouth and nose are touched with germy hands that illness is spread.

Not only do we have the children and families observe these procedures, the staff must wash frequently and thoroughly as well.

Why we do what we do

At Children's Corner, it is our goal to create learning opportunities for your child that will best help her/him to become successful learners. This year we are implementing a new approach based on Harvard University's Dr. Howard Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences. The following eight intelligences have been identified by Dr. Gardner:

 · Linguistic ( Word Smart)

· Logical-Mathematical ( Number Smart)

· Spatial ( Picture Smart)

· Kinesthetic ( Body Smart)

· Musical ( Music Smart)

· Naturalist (Nature Smart)

· Interpersonal ( People Smart)

· Intrapersonal (Self Smart)

What this means is not only will the children be learning through reading ,writing and math skills, but also music, art, building, moving, engaging in natural learning experiences, interacting with others, thinking and reflecting. Each teacher will attempt to match learning experiences with each child's own way of being smart.

Another goal we have is to meet each child where they are developmentally and help them to continue to develop to their full potential. Children develop in a similar manner , but on a timetable that is unique to each child. That means that at any given time, a group of children at a similar chronological age will be at a variety of ability levels developmentally.

One four year old may be reading while another is just starting to recognize the alphabet. The same child who is able to read may still be challenged when it comes to socially interacting with classmates. The child who is just beginning to recognize the alphabet may be the most agile child when it comes to playing a game of catch and keep away.

Using whole child instruction, we strive to meet the individual needs and assist the development of each child in all developmental domains. These domains are intellectual, social/ emotional, and physical.  We support the concept that young children are developing in several domains simultaneously. Each of these areas are equally important and interwoven. The latest research shows that intellectual and social/emotional domains develop hand in hand.

Ask your child's teacher about activities that you can do to support each area of development for your child. And remember to enjoy this time in your child's life. We are given only one opportunity to experience our children.
